| Problem Statement: | Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) results show that these young people face several Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) challenges, which include teenage pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), unsafe abortions, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), child marriage, drugs and substance abuse, Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) and other adverse health, social, mental and economic consequences. Adolescence require special attention and guidance in times of rapid modernization, globalization and technological advancements, where they are exposed to more information than ever before, they need targeted program that addresses their need in a friendly approach. |
| Innovation Description: | Our Health Our Responsibility is an initiative that adopts the education through listening technique to deliver teaching and learning approach emphasizes on the importance of auditory learning. Young people including teenage mother will acquire Knowledge on making health choices and family planning services through use of auditory learning technique. |
| Uniqueness and Innovation: | The project doesn't require much resource to execute it only requires peer educators to engage young people of reproductive age in their space for the online resource material this will be played using smart phone . The engagement doesn't require meeting spaces but using already safe spaces used by young people of reproductive age. The session will be recorded and the live experience will be used to inform sub sequent session and will provide information for effective programming. The video content will be played in local social halls used by young people to watch footballs hence their no additonal investment in showcasing audio visual content as this resource already exit |
| Impact and Scalability: | Young people best listen to fellow peers they are key to get information they can relate with and they want information delivered in an approach they can relate with in their local language . They feel safe to shape they future and by being the center of discussion by contributing to how they can take there responsibility of the health from a point of view and not being judge or instructed to what they should do the project tap to the potential of young people and harnessing their power to make informed decision and be responsible of their health . They will listen to lived experience of teenage mothers and young people who have passed through they will discuss pathways of change and be informed on correct SRHR and contraceptive . The facilitators will conduct follow up session to ensure they are well informed . This initiative can be replicate in any context as young people already have spaces they has informal discussions young men has spots where they discuss football , young women have groups where they discuss hence training their peers to use the space for disseminating information |
| Implementation Plan: | The project will target to reach out to 240 young people of reproductive age , the program will recruit ten peer educators 6 male and 6 females drawn from the local areas they will be task to conduct four sessions per month with two set of group one initial session and one follow up session . A pair of two will conduct the session and task to conduct a follow up session using the education through listen model . The program will only support the peer educators with facilitators allowance , support in payment of the halls used at the community to screen footballs especially on visual audio content . The project will engage a project officer and Monitoring and evaluation officer to support in documenting stories shared by participants which will be recorded by the participants upon the consent of participants engaged on the program. To ensure quality of delivery of the sessions the peer educators will be trained and to ensure their is limitation of participants participating they sessions will be strictly conducted in 2 hours well structured . The participants will be tasked to ensure they reach out to participants in advance and ensure retention of the mobilized participant during the follow up session to avoid the risk of less participants participating in the follow up sessions .
