Introduction
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.
The global theme for this year’s campaign, which will run from 25 November to 10 December 2024, is “Towards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls. This theme highlights the ongoing global commitment to addressing GBV and advancing women’s rights.
The Kwale SGBV Act plays a crucial role in tackling gender-based violence by providing a comprehensive framework for prevention, support, and legal recourse. Through focused advocacy efforts, community-based organizations, activists, and stakeholders in Kwale have played a pivotal role in lobbying for the bill’s consideration, raising awareness, and building public support.
The webinar aims to share experiences, challenges, and insights gained during this advocacy journey, offering a model for similar efforts elsewhere.
Objectives
- To highlight the provisions of the Kwale SGBV Act
- To share key advocacy strategies and lessons learned from the passing of the SGBV Act in Kwale.
- To discuss the challenges faced in the advocacy process, including cultural, political, and structural barriers.
- To highlight the roles of different stakeholders such as community organizations, government officials, youth, and religious leaders.
- To inspire and equip other counties with knowledge and strategies for advocating similar legislative changes.
